What is Total Consecration?
Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is a 33-day course that builds on True Devotion to Mary according to St. Louis Marie de Montfort. It’s an amazing way to grow deeper in your faith and draw closer to Jesus through Mary. Each of the 33 days includes a short video, some written reflections, and prayer time. Join us!
Part III: Knowledge of Mary, Day 6
Welcome back to our series. Today is our sixth day of Part III, Knowledge of Mary. From our manual for Consecration, St. Louis begins by explaining the seven effects of True Devotion to Our Lady when faithfully practiced. The First effect is the knowledge and contempt of self. By the light of the Holy Spirit will give us, through His dear Spouse Mary Most Holy, we will understand our own evil and our incapacity for anything good. In other words, the humble Mary will communicate to us a portion of Her profound humility, which will make us despise ourselves, despised nobody else, but loved to be despised.
The second effect is that Our Lady will give us a portion of her faith, which was the greatest of all faiths, that was in this world, greater than all the faiths of all the patriarchs, prophets, apostles and saints put together. Mary receives the virtue of faith surpassing beyond our understanding. There is a beautiful description of Mary’s faith in the book, True Devotion #214. We recall, Our Lady did not hesitate to give Her Yes at the Annunciation, which made Elizabeth exclaim in a loud voice, “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb,” because Mary believes all what was spoken from the Lord would be accomplished in her. In Bethlehem, Our Lady sees her Son and believes that He is the Creator.
At the foot of the cross, though all of the apostles have fled except John, Mary stands erect there, firm in her faith that her Son is the Son of God. The third effect is that the Mother of Fair Love will take away from our heart all scruples and all disorder of servile fear. She will open and enlarge our heart to run the way of her Son’s commandments with holy liberty of God’s children. She will introduce into our hearts that pure love of which she has all the treasures, so that we will no longer serve the God of Love in fear as we have done, but in pure love. If we have the misfortune of offending Him, we will at once ask forgiveness humbly, we will stretch out our hands to Him in tenderness with unshaken confidence. The fourth effect is great confidence in God and Our Lady. I like this for there’s a beautiful title of Mary, Our Lady of Confidence. You know, we have our human confidence, when we entrust our worries, decisions, interior torments which, sometimes afflicts us.
This fourth effect is the encounter of human confidence and Mary, Our Lady of Confidence just like in Eucharistic Adoration there is an encounter of two loves one is human, the other is divine. When we come to Blessed Sacrament we are not approaching Jesus by ourselves, but always with Mary. The fifth effect is the communication of the soul and spirit of Mary. St. Louis Marie de Montfort says, “The soul of the Blessed Lady will communicate itself to you, to glorify the Lord. Her spirit will enter into the place of yours to rejoice in God her salvation, provided only, that you are faithful to the practices of this devotion.” St. Ambrose says, “Let the soul of Mary be in each of us to glorify the Lord, let the spirit of Mary be in each of us to rejoice in God.”
The sixth effect is the transformation of the soul into the likeness of Christ. There is no doubt because the Holy Spirit formed Jesus in Mary’s womb. The last effect is the greater glory of God. Our Lord gives more glory to the Father by submitting Himself to Mary. Following our Lord, by giving ourselves totally to Our Lady through this consecration will give more glory to the Father. These are the seven effects of true devotion to Our Lady in us. For me, this is not just seven effects but seven wonders of True Devotion to Our Lady.
Readings and Prayers for Day 25 of 33
Spiritual Exercises: Acts of love pious affection for the Blessed Virgin, imitation of her virtues, especially her profound humility, her lively faith, her blind obedience, her continual mental prayer, her mortification in all things, her ardent charity, her heroic patience, her angelic sweetness, her divine wisdom her divine purity; “these being,” as St. Louis de Montfort says, “ the ten principal virtues of Our Lady.” (With some slight difference from TD # 108)
True Devotion: Nos. 213-225
Wonderful Effects of This Devotion My dear friend, be sure that if you remain faithful to the interior and exterior practices of this devotion which I will point out, the following effects will be produced in your soul:
First Effect: By the light which the Holy Spirit will give you through Mary, his faithful spouse, you will perceive the evil inclinations of your fallen nature and how incapable you are of any good apart from that which God produces in you as Author of nature and of grace. As a consequence of this knowledge, you will despise yourself and think of yourself only as an object of repugnance. Finally, the humble Virgin Mary will share her humility with you so that, although you regard yourself with distaste and desire to be disregarded by others, you will not look down upon anyone.
Second Effect: Our Blessed Lady will also give you a portion of her faith with, which was greater than all the patriarchs, prophets, apostles and saints’ faith put together.
Third Effect: This Mother of fair love will rid your heart of all scruples and inordinate servile fear.
Fourth Effect: Our Blessed Lady will fill you with unbounded confidence in God and in herself Because you will no longer approach Jesus by yourself but always through Mary, your loving Mother.
Fifth Effect: The soul of Mary will be communicated to you to glorify the Lord. Her spirit will take the place of yours to rejoice in God, her Savior, but only if you are faithful to the practices of this devotion.
Sixth Effect: If Mary, the Tree of Life, is well cultivated in our soul by fidelity to this devotion, she will in due time bring forth her fruit which is none other than Jesus.
Seventh Effect: If you live this devotion sincerely, you will give more glory to Jesus in a month than in many years of a more demanding devotion.
St. Louis Marie de Montfort’s Prayer to Mary
Hail Mary, beloved Daughter of the Eternal Father! Hail Mary, admirable Mother of the Son! Hail Mary, faithful spouse of the Holy Ghost! Hail Mary, my dear Mother, my loving Mistress, my powerful sovereign! Hail my joy, my glory, my heart, and my soul! Thou art all mine by mercy, and I am all thine by justice. But I am not yet sufficiently thine. I now give myself wholly to thee without keeping anything back for myself or others. If thou still seest in me anything which does not belong to thee, I beseech thee to take it and to make thyself the absolute Mistress of all that is mine.
Destroy in me all that may be displeasing to God, root it up and bring it to naught; place and cultivate in me everything that is pleasing to thee. May the light of thy faith dispel the darkness of my mind; may thy profound humility take the place of my pride; may thy sublime contemplation check the distractions of my wandering imagination; may thy continuous sight of God fill my memory with His presence; may the burning love of thy heart inflame the lukewarmness of mine; may thy virtues take the place of my sins; may thy merits be my only adornment in the sight of God and make up for all that is wanting in me. Finally, dearly beloved Mother, grant, if it be possible, that I may have no other spirit but thine to know Jesus and His divine will; that I may have no other soul but thine to praise and glorify the Lord; that I may have no other heart but thine to love God with a love as pure and ardent as thine I do not ask thee for visions, revelations, sensible devotion or spiritual pleasures. It is thy privilege to see God clearly; it is thy privilege to enjoy heavenly bliss; it is thy privilege to triumph gloriously in Heaven at the right hand of thy Son and to hold absolute sway over angels, men, and demons; it is thy privilege to dispose of all the gifts of God, just as thou willest.
Such is, O heavenly Mary, the “best part,” which the Lord has given thee and which shall never be taken away from thee–and this thought fills my heart with joy. As for my part here below, I wish for no other than that which was thine: to believe sincerely without spiritual pleasures; to suffer joyfully without human consolation; to die continually to myself without respite; and to work zealously and unselfishly for thee until death as the humblest of thy servants. The only grace I beg thee to obtain for me is that every day and every moment of my life I may say: Amen, So be it, to all that thou didst do while on earth; Amen, so be it, to all that thou art now doing in Heaven; Amen, so be it, to all that thou art doing in my soul, so that thou alone mayest fully glorify Jesus in me for time and eternity. Amen.

Ave Maris Stella
Hail, bright star of ocean,
God’s own Mother blest,
Ever sinless Virgin,
Gate of heavenly rest.
Taking that sweet Ave
Which from Gabriel came,
Peace confirm within us,
Changing Eva’s name.
Break the captives’ fetters,
Light on blindness pour,
All our ills expelling,
Every bliss implore.
Show thyself a Mother;
May the Word Divine,
Born for us thy Infant,
Hear our prayers through thine.
Virgin all excelling,
Mildest of the mild,
Freed from guilt, preserve us,
Pure and undefiled.
Keep our life all spotless,
Make our way secure,
Till we find in Jesus,
Joy forevermore.
Through the highest Heaven
To the Almighty Three,
Father, Son and Spirit,
One same glory be. Amen.
