Part III: Knowledge of Mary, Day 3
Welcome back to our series for consecration to Our Lady and we are now on the third day of Part III, Knowledge of Mary. Hope everyone is excited. I tell you I am excited as we move on in these preparations. Last time we ended up with St. Louis Marie de Montfort words saying that in order for us to attain a perfect union with Our Lord we must be closely united to Our Lady. Now in order to be closely united to Mary, we must understand five distinctive marks of True Devotion to Our Lady. These are the following namely: interior, tender, holy, constant and disinterested. First is interior, that is, it comes from the mind and heart. With the senses and faculties that God has given us, we are able to perceive and experience the goodness of the Blessed Mother. From this experience of her motherly love and goodness, we can not remain passive, but respond with love and gratitude for such a great Mother.
Being convinced that God raised Our Lady to such a height of holiness higher than all the angels and saints, being the Mother of God, we ought to honor her, listen to her and promote her cause. This is what it means to be interior. True devotion to our Lady is interior: it comes from the mind and heart, it flows from the esteem we have for her, the high idea we have formed of her greatness and the love which we have for her. The interior spirit, Love and conviction must impel us to practice this devotion faithfully. Second is tender, which is full of confidence. This confidence makes the soul have recourse to the Blessed Mother in all of its necessities, with much simplicity trust and tenderness. It implores the aid of its good mother at all times, in all places above all things: in its doubt that they may be enlightened; in its wanderings that it may be brought to the right path; in its temptation that it may be supported; in its weakness, that it may be strengthened, in its falls that it may be lifted up; in its discouragement that it maybe cheered; in its crosses and disappointments in life, that it may be consoled, in all evils of body and mind, the soul ordinarily has recourse to Our lady without fear of displeasing Jesus.
Third is Holy for it leads us to avoid sin and to imitate the ten principal virtues of the Blessed Mother: her profound humility, her blind obedience, her continual prayer, her universal mortification, her divine purity, her ardent charity, heroic patience, angelical sweetness and divine wisdom. Imitating her virtues is an essential thing in practicing this devotion. The fourth characteristic of true devotion to Our Lady is constant. It makes the soul courageous, in opposing the world in its fashions and maxims. It confirms the soul in good and does not give up easily its spiritual practices. When it falls he rises up again, by stretching out his hands to his good mother. The Blessed Virgin gives them the special graces to practice the rules of fidelity, faithfulness, perseverance, and love in spite of the world the flesh and devil. The final characteristic of Devotion to Our Lady is disinterested, not self-centered: that is to say, it inspires the soul, not to seek itself but God only, and God in His holy Mother. We serve and love God and Our Lady, not because of whatever favors we want to obtain, whether material or spiritual, but out of pure love because they deserve to be loved, and they are more loving and more lovable than we could imagine. And so these are the five distinctive marks of true devotion to Our Lady. I want you to start reading and think about, familiarizing these five characteristics of true devotion to Our Lady, for they are truly helpful for us during these days in our efforts to know The Blessed Mother.
Readings and Prayers for Day 22 of 33
Spiritual Exercises: Acts of love pious affection for the Blessed Virgin, imitation of her virtues, especially her profound humility, her lively faith, her blind obedience, her continual mental prayer, her mortification in all things, her ardent charity, her heroic patience, her angelic sweetness, her divine wisdom her divine purity; “these being,” as St. Louis de Montfort says, “ the ten principal virtues of Our Lady.” (With some slight difference from TD # 108)
True Devotion: Nos. 105-110
The Characteristics of true devotion First, true devotion to our Lady is interior, that is, it comes from within the mind and the heart and follows from the esteem in which we hold her, the high regard we have for her greatness, and the love we bear her.
Second, it is trustful, that is to say, it fills us with confidence in the Blessed Virgin, the confidence that a child has for its loving Mother. It prompts us to go to her in every need of body and soul with great simplicity, trust, and affection.
Third, true devotion to our Lady is holy, that is, it leads us to avoid sin and to imitate the virtues of Mary. Her ten principal virtues are deep humility, lively faith, blind obedience, unceasing prayer, constant self-denial, surpassing purity, ardent love, heroic patience, angelic kindness, and heavenly wisdom.
Fourth, true devotion to our Lady is constant. It strengthens us in our desire to do good and prevents us from giving up our devotional practices too easily. It gives us the courage to oppose the fashions and maxims of the world, the vexations and unruly inclinations of the flesh and the temptations of the devil. Thus, a person truly devoted to our Blessed Lady is not changeable, fretful, scrupulous or timid. We do not say however that such a person never sins or that his sensible feelings of devotion never change. When he has fallen, he stretches out his hand to his Blessed Mother and rises again. If he loses all taste and feeling for devotion, he is not at all upset because a good and faithful servant of Mary is guided in his life by faith in Jesus and Mary, and not by feelings.
Fifth, true devotion to Mary is disinterested. It inspires us to seek God alone in his Blessed Mother and not ourselves. The true subject of Mary does not serve his illustrious Queen for selfish gain. He does not serve her for temporal or eternal well-being but simply and solely because she has the right to be served and God alone in her. He loves her not so much because she is good to him or because he expects something from her, but simply because she is lovable. That is why he loves and serves her just as faithfully in weariness and dryness of soul as in sweet and sensible fervor.
St. Louis Marie de Montfort’s Prayer to Mary
Hail Mary, beloved Daughter of the Eternal Father! Hail Mary, admirable Mother of the Son! Hail Mary, faithful spouse of the Holy Ghost! Hail Mary, my dear Mother, my loving Mistress, my powerful sovereign! Hail my joy, my glory, my heart, and my soul! Thou art all mine by mercy, and I am all thine by justice. But I am not yet sufficiently thine. I now give myself wholly to thee without keeping anything back for myself or others. If thou still seest in me anything which does not belong to thee, I beseech thee to take it and to make thyself the absolute Mistress of all that is mine.
Destroy in me all that may be displeasing to God, root it up and bring it to naught; place and cultivate in me everything that is pleasing to thee. May the light of thy faith dispel the darkness of my mind; may thy profound humility take the place of my pride; may thy sublime contemplation check the distractions of my wandering imagination; may thy continuous sight of God fill my memory with His presence; may the burning love of thy heart inflame the lukewarmness of mine; may thy virtues take the place of my sins; may thy merits be my only adornment in the sight of God and make up for all that is wanting in me. Finally, dearly beloved Mother, grant, if it be possible, that I may have no other spirit but thine to know Jesus and His divine will; that I may have no other soul but thine to praise and glorify the Lord; that I may have no other heart but thine to love God with a love as pure and ardent as thine I do not ask thee for visions, revelations, sensible devotion or spiritual pleasures. It is thy privilege to see God clearly; it is thy privilege to enjoy heavenly bliss; it is thy privilege to triumph gloriously in Heaven at the right hand of thy Son and to hold absolute sway over angels, men, and demons; it is thy privilege to dispose of all the gifts of God, just as thou willest.
Such is, O heavenly Mary, the “best part,” which the Lord has given thee and which shall never be taken away from thee–and this thought fills my heart with joy. As for my part here below, I wish for no other than that which was thine: to believe sincerely without spiritual pleasures; to suffer joyfully without human consolation; to die continually to myself without respite and to work zealously and unselfishly for thee until death as the humblest of thy servants. The only grace I beg thee to obtain for me is that every day and every moment of my life I may say: Amen, So be it, to all that thou didst do while on earth; Amen, so be it, to all that thou art now doing in Heaven; Amen, so be it, to all that thou art doing in my soul, so that thou alone mayest fully glorify Jesus in me for time and eternity. Amen.

Ave Maris Stella
Hail, bright star of ocean,
God’s own Mother blest,
Ever sinless Virgin,
Gate of heavenly rest.
Taking that sweet Ave
Which from Gabriel came,
Peace confirm within us,
Changing Eva’s name.
Break the captives’ fetters,
Light on blindness pour,
All our ills expelling,
Every bliss implore.
Show thyself a Mother;
May the Word Divine,
Born for us thy Infant,
Hear our prayers through thine.
Virgin all excelling,
Mildest of the mild,
Freed from guilt, preserve us,
Pure and undefiled.
Keep our life all spotless,
Make our way secure,
Till we find in Jesus,
Joy forevermore.
Through the highest Heaven
To the Almighty Three,
Father, Son and Spirit,
One same glory be. Amen.
