Part II: Knowledge of Self, Day 3
It’s good to be back and welcome to our series. Hope you are in good spirit fully charged with Our Lady’s grace as we move on today on the third day, Part II knowledge of Self. From Our Manual for Consecration, we have this great challenge from Our Lord to repentance. The word repentance is always linked to the promise of forgiveness and the assurance of God’s mercy. It is frequently used to demand that humanity must turn away from evil, a return back to God who offers forgiveness. The turning about that is required by Our Lord as indicated in our reading today is a radical reorientation of one whole self and conduct which include an interior aspect of repentance, a change of heart.
We recall St. John the Baptist preaching repentance, and so, with Our Lord. St. John Paul II during his time gave us the luminous mysteries of the Rosary and one of these is what St. John and Our Lord exactly preached: The coming of the kingdom of God and the Call to conversion or a call to repentance. This repentance that Our Lord preached is good news to be received with joy. After His resurrection, He sent his followers to preach repentance and to baptize all nations for the forgiveness of sin. The Holy Catholic Church continues to preach repentance to the whole world guiding the people towards that kingdom we hope for, but also demands the daily withdrawal from sin, a gradual but radical turning back to God through repentance. Repentance remains one of the most fundamental aspects of our Christian vocation because we are prone to commit sin. From our manual for consecration taken, Our Lord says very clearly, “Unless you repent you will also die.” The people told Our Lord about the disaster resulting from the tragic collapse of the tower, which claimed 18 lives. What the people saw was physical death. They did not see the worst disaster–a spiritual death more dangerous than physical death if they do not repent. And so, Our Lord said twice to them: “Unless you repent you will also die.” Does this sound familiar to us with all the deaths and natural calamities that are happening around the world? Isn’t this a light given to us by Our Lord today to understand who we are, and the worst disaster that will come to us if we don’t repent and ask forgiveness?
Our spiritual death is seen as a decisive act of human freedom in which a person decides whether to accept or reject God the source of life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: “death is the end of earthly life, and so remembering our mortality, helps us to realize that we have only a limited time in which to bring our lives to fulfillment,” have we realized this? And so, knowing the separation of the spirit from the body will come eventually, we have these beautiful lines from the Liturgy of the Hours during Night Prayer: “Into your hands Lord I commend my spirit,” by which we freely give ourselves to hands of God. If we think of our death and the death of our Lord on the Cross, we could truly say; death is indeed a mystery, in fact, it is the fifth sorrowful mystery. Christ died, but on the third day, he rose again. This is the foundation of our hope: Christ’s Resurrection. St. Paul in his letter to the Romans writes: “For if we have been united with Him in his death, we shall be united with Him in his resurrection.” Our little dying to self is the practice of giving ourselves over to God and others in charity. Now, among many devotions that exist, St Louis Marie de Montfort says this, “We must choose devotion to Our Lady, the one which draws us most, towards this death to ourselves, in as much as it will be the best and most sanctifying.”

A Call to Repentance.

81. Secondly, in order to empty ourselves of self, we must die daily to ourselves. This involves our renouncing what the powers of the soul and the senses of the body incline us to do. We must see as if we did not see, hear as if we did not hear and use the things of this world as if we did not use them. This is what St. Paul calls “dying daily”. Unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain and does not bear any good fruit. If we do not die to self and if our holiest devotions do not lead us to this necessary and fruitful death, we shall not bear fruit of any worth and our devotions will cease to be profitable. All our good works will be tainted by self-love and self-will so that our greatest sacrifices and our best actions will be unacceptable to God. Consequently, when we come to die we shall find ourselves devoid of virtue and merit and discover that we do not possess even one spark of that pure love which God shares only with those who have died to themselves and whose life is hidden with Jesus Christ in him.
82. Thirdly, we must choose among all the devotions to the Blessed Virgin the one which will lead us more surely to this dying to self. This devotion will be the best and the most sanctifying for us. For we must not believe that all that glitters is gold, all that is sweet is honey, or all that is easy to do and is done by the majority of people is the most sanctifying. Just as in nature there are secrets enabling us to do certain natural things quickly, easily and at little cost, so in the spiritual life there are secrets which enable us to perform works rapidly, smoothly and with the facility. Such works are, for example, emptying ourselves of self-love, filling ourselves with God, and attaining perfection.
The devotion that I propose to explain is one of these secrets of grace, for it is unknown to most Christians. Only a few devout people know of it and it is practiced and appreciated by fewer still. To begin the explanation of this devotion here is a fourth truth which is a consequence of the third.
