Abortion is the greatest evil in our world today. Sadly, we live in a culture of death where human life is devalued, in particular the life of the unborn child. Since the Roe vs. Wade legal decision in 1973, over 60 million babies have lost their lives to legal abortions in our country.
We all must pray for an end to this horrendous evil. Let us pray for all mothers and their babies. Let us pray for mothers to reject abortion and to receive the help they and their babies need both before and after the baby’s birth!
Below are some of Mother Teresa’s words on the sanctity of human life and abortion:
“….And as she came into the house of her cousin Elizabeth, Scripture tells us that the unborn child – the child in the womb of Elizabeth – leapt with joy. While still in the womb of Mary, Jesus brought peace to John the Baptist who leapt for joy in the womb of Elizabeth. The unborn was the first one to proclaim the coming of Christ.
“….If we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts.
“Jesus gave even His life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts.
“….Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.
“….Many people are also concerned about all the violence in this great country of the United States. These concerns are very good. But often these same people are not concerned with the millions who are being killed by the deliberate decision of their own mothers. And this is what is the greatest destroyer of peace today – abortion which brings people to such blindness.
“But what does God say to us? He says: ‘Even if a mother could forget her child, I will not forget you. I have carved you in the palm of my hand” [see Isaiah 49:15-17]. We are carved in the palm of His hand; that unborn child has been carved in the hand of God from conception and is called by God to love and be loved, not only now in this life, but forever. God can never forget us.“ (Mother Teresa’s Sisters have shown their commitment to the sanctity of human life in many, many ways, including helping place children in loving adoptive homes.)
Let us commit to pray daily for an end to the scourge of abortion in our land and throughout the world. You can pray the prayer we share below or pray in your own words.
Daily Prayer to End Abortion
Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life,
And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters.
I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion,
Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death
By the Resurrection of Your Son.
I am ready to do my part in ending abortion.
Today I commit myself
Never to be silent,
Never to be passive,
Never to be forgetful of the unborn.
I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement,
And never to stop defending life
Until all my brothers and sisters are protected,
And our nation once again becomes
A nation with liberty and justice
Not just for some, but for all.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen!
