Aspirations are short daily Catholic prayers which are easy to memorize, such as “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you; save souls”; “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You”; and “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” St. Paul exhorts us to “pray constantly” (1 Thess. 5:17). One way we can do this is through the Morning Offering, but we can also make use of aspirations to help keep us focused on God throughout our busy day.
God gives us each new breath and each new day. How can we not, in turn, give our time, our day, to Him? Praying aspirations frequently is one way to offer our day to Him, to give him first place in our lives. It is so easy to get caught up in the busyness of the day, and its joys and sorrows, that we can accidentally neglect to remember Our Lord and His love.
We can pray these short daily prayers anywhere and anytime—driving, walking, cooking, eating, getting ready for work, riding the bus, relaxing at home, waiting at the doctor’s office or in traffic, resting in bed,… The possibilities go on and on!
